Chapter Three

Morning's gentle caress awakened the forest, light filtering through the cave entrance with a soft, golden hue. Stirring from the cocoon of furs, I stretched, my limbs reawakening as I let out a deep, satisfying yawn. Despite the cave's hard floor, the furs had provided a surprising level of comfort, cradling my body through the night. As consciousness fully returned, I noticed Alaric's form nearby. He had been my silent guardian through the dark hours, his proximity a testament to an unspoken vow of protection. He was already awake, tending to our modest encampment within the cave's embrace.

"Did you lay with me?" I inquired, my voice raspy with sleep, eyes still heavy as I struggled to bring the world into focus. "I've never known warmth like that."

"Even with the fur, you seemed quite cold," Alaric responded, his attention momentarily diverted from a bowl he was filling with remnants of last night's stew. He handed it to me, an offering both simple and deeply meaningful. "I did not want you to catch a cold."

"If you keep treating me so well, I might not leave, Alaric," I teased, the words playful yet laced with an underlying sincerity. I brought a spoonful of the reheated stew to my lips, the warmth and flavor a welcome greeting to the new day.

Alaric responded with a snort, a semblance of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth, though he seemed intent on focusing on his own meal. Loneliness, I realized, wasn't unique to my human condition; it also lingered in the shadows of this stalwart centaur's eyes.

A curious change had come over me during the night, a warmth that started in the pit of my stomach and seemed to flutter through my veins. My skin tingled, a flush evident even without a mirror to confirm.

"I hope I'm not getting sick," I mused aloud, placing the bowl aside as I attempted to catch my breath, the heat within me intensifying.

"You're not," Alaric confessed, his gaze capturing mine with an intensity that caused the warmth to flare. "I know what is ailing you."

Intrigued, I tilted my head, silently questioning how Alaric could possibly know what stirred within me. He didn't leave me in suspense for long.

"Humans and Centaurs don't mix for a reason. Your kind, particularly females, can go into a cycle of heat around us," he revealed, his eyes never leaving mine, as if trying to gauge my reaction to his words. "In the past, many human women lived with centaurs. Our population boom that led to the war was mostly due to the number of human women who stayed in our villages."

I swallowed hard, the warmth in my belly now a searing fire that seemed to consume my every thought. Alaric wasn't wrong. With each passing moment, an inexplicable desire for him grew, anchoring me more firmly to the cave, to his side.

And I couldn't deny... I relished this feeling.

"The longer I stay around you, the more lustful I will become?" I sought
